The only way out is a long way down.
Edmund Mottley, Specialist in Discreet Enquiries, is in a precarious position: his old flame Susan needs his help. Her new fiance is accused of murder, and she wants Mottley to clear his name.
Mottley would rather jump off a cliff than get involved, but when Susan is threatened by a shadowy crime syndicate, Mottley leaps to her aid.
Mottley and Baker, his intrepid valet, pursue the case to an island of otherworldly beauty. But the island is haunted by secrets, treachery, madness, and ... something more.
Every clue crumbles under their feet, pushing Mottley's powers of deduction -- and Baker's loyalty -- to the limit. With his own life on the line, can Mottley save Susan before time runs out?
The Mottley & Baker Mysteries are classic whodunnits set in the Golden Age of 1930's traditional detectives. If you like Miss Marple's pastoral puzzles or Albert Campion's rollicking adventures, you'll fall hard for this cozy historical mystery.
Review: I really enjoyed this book. This is one that you should not judge by the cover. I might have passed it by otherwise, because the cover didn't really grab me, but the story really did.

Its a mystery in the style of Agatha Christie.  Mottley is a very interesting character and one that isn't always likable. His treatment of his man, Baker might make you want to throttle him now and then, but he's a very smart posh detective.

He's asked by a former flame, Susan, to help her get her fiance out of trouble. It seems Denis was the last person to see Dismore alive. Though Mottley definitely had no liking for Denis, and by the end of the story most readers won't either, though maybe not for the reason you might be expecting.

Mottley and Baker go to Brackmore in hopes of unraveling the mystery of what happened to Dismore, whose body wasn't found when the cliff caved in.

What sets this apart from the usual mystery is the way Mottley goes about his "Discreet Inquiry" in ways that most people wouldn't expect. It really is discreet and  not outright questioning and sleuthing.

There are many twists and it is nearly impossible to figure out who was responsible for PIA's failure and all the murders.

There was only one part that disturbed me and that was the death of the cat. Those things always get to me.

Its hard for me to review this book because so much of what I want to say will spoil the book. Suffice to say it was a great historical mystery and one I definitely want to continue on with.
